Book Review: An Ode to the Self by Darshana Suresh

One often wonders what goes on in the minds of brilliant thinkers. Do they go through a process of transformation just like everyone else? If yes then what is that transformation like? Darshana Suresh‘s book, An Ode to the Self is a compilation of the author’s introspective journey told through 26 essays.

Darshana’s narrative style allows the reader to undertake an introspective journey while reading her experiences & thoughts in the book.

In June 2020, popular Blogging Community, BlogChatter gave wings to the dreams of 63 authors through the BlogChatter Ebook carnival. Darshana Suresh‘s book, An Ode to the Self was one of these gems.

About the book:

The book comprises 26 different topics that one often deals with throughout the journey of life. Right from being awkward in conversations to dealing with failure to being sensitive and trusting your zone, this book has them all. The author has neatly chronicled her internal journey, compared it to situations in her life and then left a message for the readers.

What I loved about the book?

If you think that this book is about the musings of a young girl, then you are right. However, what struck me the most about this book is that the author has gone all out in explaining what goes on in the mind of a regular millennial. It is an insight into what this generation thinks and believes in. Darshana’s narrative style has nailed the millennial’s point of view while appealing to a cross section of the population.

Outstanding self-help material – must read for all those who are in search of themselves.

Downside of the book:

There is no downside in the book I noticed. However, the way the book is being marketed could be worked on by the author. They must position the book as a self-help book for millennials because that is what it is. It’s not a book of short stories nor is it a novel. It contains essays that reflect the hesitations and journey of self-discovery that every youngster goes through today.

DiaryOfAnInsaneWriter Verdict: 4/5

An Ode to the Self by Darshana Suresh is a brilliant book for anyone who wishes to move towards total self-acceptance.

  1. Thanks for this review Mayura. I have read this book and found it to be a great first work by someone so young. The reader can relate to a lot of the inner conflicts that the author writes about and her resolution to these issues are also very enlightening.

  3. I am a sucker for good self-help books. But to see a millennial writing one for the ‘much-in-demand’ millennials who have never ever thought of self-help (least to say) is so well thought. I see this book should be read by each and every corporate house and founders of starts-ups.

  4. What goes on in the mind of millennials is something I would love to understand too. Their approach is quite different than us and they’re surely more focussed. Good review! Would like to give this book a read.
